What Is This Test?

The Lipid Profile, also known as a Lipid Panel, is a blood test that measures the levels of fats (lipids) in your blood. It helps assess your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions.

The test measures different types of cholesterol and triglycerides that play an important role in your body's normal functions. However, abnormal lipid levels can lead to the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

A Lipid Profile is commonly performed as part of a routine health check-up and is also used to monitor the effectiveness of cholesterol-lowering medications and lifestyle changes.

Why this test is performed?

Doctors may recommend a Lipid Profile to:

  • Assess the risk of heart disease
  • Screen for high cholesterol (Hyperlipidemia)
  • Evaluate the risk of stroke
  • Monitor cholesterol-lowering treatment
  • Assess cardiovascular health
  • Monitor patients with diabetes
  • Evaluate obesity and metabolic syndrome
  • Screen individuals with a family history of high cholesterol
  • Assess risk factors before surgery
  • Monitor the effectiveness of diet and exercise programs

Test Preparation

Fasting for 9–12 hours is commonly recommended, especially if triglycerides are being measured.

Water is allowed during the fasting period.

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.

Avoid heavy meals and strenuous exercise the day before testing.

Inform your healthcare provider about medications such as statins, steroids, oral contraceptives, or beta-blockers, as they may influence lipid levels.
