What Is This Test?

The Vitamin B12 test is a blood test that measures the level of Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) in your bloodstream. Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that plays a vital role in the production of red blood cells, proper nerve function, DNA synthesis, and brain health.

A deficiency of Vitamin B12 can lead to megaloblastic anemia, nerve damage, memory problems, and fatigue. This test helps diagnose Vitamin B12 deficiency or excess and monitor treatment in individuals receiving Vitamin B12 supplements or injections.

Why this test is performed?

Doctors may recommend the Vitamin B12 test to:

  • Diagnose Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Investigate anemia
  • Evaluate numbness or tingling in the hands and feet
  • Assess memory problems or confusion
  • Investigate chronic fatigue or weakness
  • Monitor Vitamin B12 replacement therapy
  • Evaluate nutritional deficiencies
  • Assess patients with digestive disorders affecting nutrient absorption
  • Monitor individuals following strict vegetarian or vegan diets
  • Evaluate unexplained neurological symptoms

Test Preparation

Fasting is generally not required, but some laboratories may recommend 6–8 hours of fasting for more consistent results.

Drink water as usual unless instructed otherwise.

Inform your doctor about Vitamin B12 supplements, multivitamins, or recent Vitamin B12 injections.

Tell your healthcare provider about medications such as metformin, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), or certain antibiotics, as they may affect Vitamin B12 levels.
