What Is This Test?

Measures the absolute number of lymphocytes in a microlitre of blood.

Why this test is performed?

These are white cells (T and B cells) that fight viral infections and make antibodies; changes are seen in viral infections, HIV, some leukaemias and immune problems. The absolute count is more reliable than the percentage alone for judging whether levels are truly high or low.

Who should take this test?

Tiredness, weakness, pale skin, fever, frequent infections, easy bruising or bleeding; routine health check-ups.

Test Preparation

No fasting needed.
