GLP-1 medicines need a prescription. They are Schedule H drugs in India, and the DCGI advises that endocrinologists, internal medicine physicians or cardiologists prescribe them. Our partner pharmacies check every prescription before dispensing.

What GLP-1 does, from gut to brain

After a meal, your gut releases a hormone called GLP-1 that tells your body food has arrived. GLP-1 medicines copy that message and make it last much longer.

GLP-1 signal
  • Brain: you feel full sooner

It acts on the brain's hunger centres, so a smaller plate feels like enough and cravings quieten.
  • Stomach: food moves on more slowly

Fullness lasts longer and sugar rises less sharply after meals.
  • Pancreas: insulin when you need it

When sugar is high, it releases more insulin and less glucagon, which brings sugar down.

Semaglutide

Copies one signal: GLP-1

  • Lowers appetite and blood sugar
  • Weekly injection or daily tablet
  • Brands: Wegovy, Ozempic, Rybelsus, generics

Tirzepatide

Copies two signals: GLP-1 and GIP

  • More weight loss on average in head-to-head studies
  • Weekly injection
  • Brands: Mounjaro, Yurpeak

Neither is best for everyone. The right one depends on your condition, other medicines, side effects and budget. In December 2025 the WHO issued its first guideline recommending GLP-1 therapies for adults with obesity, as one part of care alongside food, activity and follow-up.

Using a brand for something it isn't approved for is off-label, and only your doctor can decide on that.

Weekly pen or daily tablet

Most people in India start on a weekly injection. The tablet suits people who'd rather not inject and can keep a strict morning routine.

Once a week

Injection pen

Mounjaro, Yurpeak, Wegovy, Ozempic

How it's given
Under the skin of the tummy, thigh or upper arm with a short, fine needle, on the same day each week. Your doctor shows you how in the first visit.
Storage
Keep unopened pens in the fridge at 2–8 °C. Never freeze them.
Once a day

Tablet

Rybelsus and some generic semaglutide brands

How it's taken
First thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small sip of water. No food, drink or other medicines for at least 30 minutes.
Good to know
Approved in India for type 2 diabetes only. Skipping the wait reduces how much medicine you absorb.

Working out your monthly cost

The box price is only the start. Six things decide what you actually spend, and most change over the first few months.

  • Brand or generic

Generics start around ₹350 a week. Brands cost several times more.

  • Your dose

You start low and step up, so month three often costs more than month one.

  • Pen, vial or tablet

The same molecule can be priced differently by format.

  • How long you're treated

Many people stay on treatment for a year or more.

  • Follow-up visits

Each dose change needs a doctor's review.

  • Lab tests

Baseline and follow-up tests, as your doctor advises.

About ₹1,400 to ₹15,000+ a month From some generic semaglutide to higher-strength branded pens. Ask your doctor and pharmacy for a current estimate.

Who they're for, and who needs extra care

This guide is about adults. Your doctor decides after looking at your history, medicines and test results.

Doctors may consider treatment if you

  • Have a BMI of 30 or more
  • Have a BMI of 27 or more with a weight-related condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea or heart disease
  • Have type 2 diabetes that isn't at target on current treatment
  • Are ready to keep up changes in food and activity alongside the medicine

Tell your doctor first if

  • You or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2
  • You've had pancreatitis or gallbladder problems
  • You're pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy
  • You have type 1 diabetes, kidney disease, diabetic eye disease or gastroparesis
  • You take insulin or a sulfonylurea, which raises the risk of low sugar

Why the BMI check shows two scales: many Indians develop diabetes and heart risk at a lower BMI, so Indian guidelines use lower cut-offs (overweight from 23, obesity from 25). Medicine labels mostly use the global cut-offs. Your doctor weighs both, along with waist size and blood tests.

Starting GLP-1 treatment on Daktar

Doctors, lab tests and pharmacies are all on Daktar, so your treatment stays in one place from the first call to each follow-up.

  1. 1. Talk to a specialist

Video call with an endocrinologist, physician or cardiologist. They decide if treatment suits you.

  2. 2. Baseline tests

Often HbA1c, lipids, kidney and liver function. Book with home sample collection.

  3. 3. E-prescription

If suitable: the medicine, starting dose and when it steps up, with food and side-effect advice.

  4. 4. Verified pharmacy

A pharmacist checks your prescription. Pens arrive in cold-chain packaging.

  5. 5. Follow-up

Review side effects, sugar and progress with the same doctor before each dose step up.

What to expect in the first months

The early months are about getting used to the medicine, not fast results. Doses rise slowly so your body can adjust.

Weeks 1–4

Starting dose
  • Mainly to help your body adjust, so don't judge results yet
  • Nausea or fullness are common and usually ease

Weeks 5–8

First step up
  • Dose usually rises about every four weeks if you're coping well
  • Side effects can return for a few days after each increase

Weeks 9–12

Settling in
  • Appetite changes become steadier
  • Repeat tests such as HbA1c may be done
  • Strength training and protein protect muscle

Month 4 onward

Long term
  • You agree a maintenance dose and plan
  • Stopping is a joint decision, as weight and sugar often rise again

Making side effects easier

  • Eat smaller meals slowly and stop at the first sign of fullness
  • Go easy on fried, rich or spicy food in the first weeks
  • Sip water through the day, especially with loose motions
  • Tell your doctor if nausea stops you eating or drinking

Get help right away if you have

  • Severe stomach pain that won't go away, sometimes spreading to the back
  • Pain under the right ribs with fever or yellow eyes
  • Swelling of the face or lips, a rash or trouble breathing
  • Shaking, sweating or confusion from low sugar
  • Vomiting so much you can't keep fluids down

In an emergency in India, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital.

Buying safely: a quick check before you inject

Fake GLP-1 pens have turned up in India, including suspected counterfeit Mounjaro pens seized near Gurugram in April 2026.

  • Licensed pharmacy

Not social media sellers, gyms or unknown websites.
  • Seal intact

Clear printing and an unbroken seal.
  • Batch and expiry match

Same on the box, the pen and the bill.
  • Arrived cold

    Chilled, never frozen.
  • Price makes sense

Far below MRP is a warning sign, not a bargain.
FAQ

Questions people ask us

Yes. A specialist on Daktar can assess you by video, ask for tests and send an e-prescription if treatment suits you. Some people may be asked for more tests or an in-person check first, and the doctor may decide a GLP-1 medicine isn't right for you.
Yes. Every GLP-1 medicine sold in India is a Schedule H drug, so a pharmacy can only dispense it against a valid prescription. The DCGI has advised that they be prescribed by endocrinologists, internal medicine physicians or cardiologists.
They contain the same molecule, semaglutide, but they are approved for different things. In India, Ozempic and the Rybelsus tablet are approved for type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is approved for weight management. Mounjaro and Yurpeak, which contain tirzepatide, are approved for both. Generic semaglutide approvals vary by brand.
Neither is best for everyone. Tirzepatide led to more weight loss on average in head-to-head studies, but the right choice depends on your condition, other medicines, side effects, budget and whether you prefer an injection or a tablet.
It depends on you, but doctors often ask for HbA1c or fasting sugar, a lipid profile, and kidney and liver function tests. You can book these on Daktar with home sample collection.
It ranges from around ₹1,400 a month for some generic semaglutide to well over ₹15,000 for higher-strength branded pens. Your dose, brand and format all change the figure, so ask your doctor and pharmacy for a current estimate.
GLP-1 medicines are often used alongside metformin. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, your doctor may lower that dose, because the combination can make blood sugar drop too low.
It can make oral contraceptive pills less reliable, especially after starting and after each dose increase. Your doctor may suggest adding or switching to a non-pill method for a few weeks at those times. Talk to them before you start.
Appetite usually returns, and studies show many people regain much of the weight they lost within a year of stopping. That's why stopping should be planned with your doctor, with a clear plan for food and activity.
GLP-1 medicines have been used for type 2 diabetes for nearly twenty years, and semaglutide and tirzepatide have been tested in large, long trials. They are generally considered safe when a doctor prescribes and monitors them, but they don't suit everyone. Stomach side effects are the most common. Share your full history with your doctor and get help right away for severe, lasting stomach pain.
