What Is This Test?

A Complete Blood Count measures the main components of your blood — haemoglobin and red blood cells, white blood cells with their types (differential count), and platelets — along with red cell indices such as MCV, MCH, MCHC and RDW. A peripheral smear is also examined under the microscope by a pathologist.

Why this test is performed?

One of the most commonly ordered tests. It helps detect anaemia, infections, inflammation, bleeding or clotting tendencies and some blood disorders, and is part of routine check-ups, fever work-ups and pre-surgery tests. The smear adds information on the shape and appearance of blood cells, which helps classify anaemia and spot abnormal cells or parasites.

Who should take this test?

Tiredness, weakness, pale skin, fever, frequent infections, easy bruising or bleeding; routine health check-ups.

No fasting needed.
