What Is This Test?

Why this test is performed?

Screens for alkaptonuria, which causes dark urine and later joint and cartilage problems. A urine test shows how much is being passed by the kidneys.

Who should take this test?

Newborns and children, as advised by the paediatrician.

Test Preparation

No fasting needed. Give a first-morning, mid-stream urine sample in a sterile container.
