What Is This Test?

Measures the fats in your blood — total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL ('good') cholesterol, LDL ('bad') cholesterol, VLDL and important ratios. In this version LDL cholesterol is measured directly rather than calculated.

Why this test is performed?

Assesses your risk of heart attack and stroke and monitors cholesterol-lowering treatment. Adults should check at least every 5 years, and every year if they have diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, smoke, or have a family history of early heart disease. Direct LDL is more accurate when triglycerides are high or LDL is very low.

Who should take this test?

Adults over 30, people with high BP, diabetes, obesity, smoking or a family history of heart disease; chest pain or breathlessness (seek urgent care).

Fast for 10–12 hours (water allowed).
