What Is This Test?

Measures methylmalonic acid in a urine sample. Methylmalonic acid rises when vitamin B12 is deficient at the tissue level.

Why this test is performed?

Confirms vitamin B12 deficiency when B12 levels are borderline, and screens for methylmalonic acidaemia in children. A urine test shows how much is being passed by the kidneys.

Who should take this test?

Fatigue, weakness, tingling or numbness, mouth ulcers, hair fall, vegetarians/vegans, older adults and people with poor diet.

Test Preparation

No fasting needed. Give a first-morning, mid-stream urine sample in a sterile container.
