A stool sample is concentrated and examined under the microscope for eggs (ova), cysts and larvae of intestinal parasites and worms.
The concentration method increases the chance of detecting worm infections (roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm) and parasites like Giardia and Entamoeba in people with diarrhoea, abdominal pain, anaemia or high eosinophils.

Parasites are shed intermittently, so testing 2–3 samples on different days improves detection.
