What Is This Test?

Measures vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) in urine collected over 24 hours. VMA is a breakdown product of adrenaline and noradrenaline.

Why this test is performed?

Helps screen for adrenaline-producing tumours such as pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma (in children). A 24-hour collection gives a more accurate picture of the total amount passed in a day than a single sample.

Who should take this test?

Symptoms suggesting hormonal imbalance — weight change, fatigue, BP changes, growth problems — usually as advised by a doctor.

Test Preparation

No fasting needed. Collect all urine for 24 hours in the container provided (discard the first morning urine on day 1, include it on day 2).
